Although we welcome the holidays, heightened stress and anticipation can bring intense sadness or depressed feelings for any of us. For nursing home residents, the holidays can also be a time when they review their lives. The loss of family members or significant others may bring additional feelings of sadness during the holiday.
Keep expectations for the holiday season manageable by not trying to make the holiday "the best ever". Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. Take into account the physical and cognitive limitations of your family member. Recognize the best time for your visit. Realize that the holiday season does not magically expel sad or lonely feelings.
Let go of the past and do not be disappointed if your holidays are not as they used to be. You can set yourself up for sadness if everything has to be just like the "good old days".
Above all, let the magic of the unexpected delight you! May your holiday season being great gifts of warmth, love and new hope- all the beautiful gifts of new life.
